This year, I had the wonderful opportunity to meet monthly with the members of Dick Pond’s Walk2Run program. Working with these runners was an inspiring experience. I enjoyed helping them with warm-ups, teaching proper running form, and listening to their personal journeys. Here are some valuable takeaways I gained from this amazing program:

Guidance

Walk2Run programs are a fantastic starting point for anyone beginning their running journey. Whether you haven’t run since high school or you’re just starting as an adult, these programs provide the structure and support you need. Participants receive group training plans designed to safely increase mileage and achieve running goals. Training with a diverse group of runners also allows you to find a pace and group that suit you best.

Motivation

The motivation within this group was incredible. While waiting for my turn to speak, I often overheard runners encouraging one another, discussing injuries, and celebrating shared accomplishments. One of the standout motivators was their coach, Sherman, who served as the group’s cheerleader. He ended every run with a motivational quote—one that stuck with me was, “Don’t come this far only to come this far!”

Commitment

Joining a Walk2Run program is a great way to stay committed to your fitness goals. It provides a structured, consistent plan for the week. The group meets once weekly for a larger session, with additional smaller group runs and “homework” to complete on your own. This takes the guesswork out of planning your fitness routine and creates a sense of accountability.

Friendship

Being part of this group felt like joining a family. Everyone was so kind and welcoming—it was as if there were no strangers, only friends. I met individuals, couples, siblings, and friends who all came together for their Monday night runs. Their warmth extended to me as well, making each session even more enjoyable.

Goal Setting

Every eight-week session culminates in a 5K run, providing participants with a clear goal to work toward. For some, the 5K was a chance to beat a personal best, while for others, it was their first time crossing the finish line. Having this end goal helped keep everyone focused and driven throughout the program.

My Advice to Aspiring Runners

If you’re a new runner, a walker looking to transition into running, or someone who needs extra motivation to get moving, I highly recommend checking out your local Walk2Run program. Not only will it help you stay active and motivated, but you might also make lifelong friendships along the way.

So lace up your shoes, take that first step, and see where the journey takes you!
